OPD: Man charged after choking, slamming wife to ground

Police arrested a man last week after he reportedly slammed his wife onto the ground while choking her.

Officers were called about a domestic disturbance around 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at Arbor Terrace Apartments, 1101 Fitch Ave., according to an Odessa Police Department news release.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the 44-year-old victim, and her husband, 56-year-old James Ricks, the release stated.

Ricks reportedly had grabbed his wife by the throat and was choking her before slamming her to the ground, the release stated. Ricks reportedly could be heard by a dispatcher saying “I only choke her because she wouldn’t give back my grandson.”

OPD charged Ricks with assault by strangulation, a third-degree felony.

Jail records show Ricks was taken to the Ector County Detention Center Wednesday and released Thursday on a $15,000 bond.
