A burglary in progress led Odessa police to a Dallas fugitive wanted for burglary of a habitation.

Police were called about the burglary around 4:48 a.m. Wednesday in the 3100 block of North Tom Green Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers found the suspect, 36-year-old Esteban Garza, in possession of a scale and marijuana pipes in plain view, an Odessa Police Department news release stated. Garza reportedly gave officers a false name and birthday, and when officers checked to see if he had any warrants, began evading officers on foot.

Officers chased Garza for about a quarter of a mile before placing him into custody, the release detailed. Dispatch then told officers Garza had a felony parole violation warrant out of Dallas County for burglary of a habitation, a second-degree felony.

Garza was further charged with evading arrest and failure to identify as a fugitive, class A misdemeanors.

Jail records show Garza was taken to the Ector County Detention Center Wednesday.
