Mother charged with assaulting children

A mother was charged by police Wednesday after reportedly assaulting her two children with a broomstick.

Officers were called about a welfare check around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at Brookview Apartments, 3843 Penbrook St., an Odessa Police Department news release stated. They then made contact with the mother, 36-year-old Cindy Miller, and her two children, a 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl.

After both kids were being disrespectful to Miller, the release detailed, she began hitting her daughter with a broomstick on her arms and left shoulder blade, and then used the broomstick to hit her son on his left arm and his right hand.

The injuries seen by officers were consistent with their story, the release stated. Officers also saw a broken broomstick nearby.

Police charged Miller with injury to a child intentionally causing bodily injury, a third-degree felony, and assault causing bodily injury, a class A misdemeanor. The release detailed CPS was notified and both children were released to a family member.

Jail records show Miller was taken to the Ector County Detention Center Wednesday and had two bonds totaling $11,500.
