Man charged with strangling girlfriend

Police charged a man Thursday after he reportedly pinned her down onto a bed and began choking her.

Police were called about a domestic disturbance at about 7 a.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of Wink Avenue, an Odessa Police Department news release stated.

Officers made contact on arrival with a 35-year-old woman and her boyfriend, 39-year-old Jonas Curry.

Curry reportedly became angry with his girlfriend because she wouldn’t give her cell phone to him and he threw her onto the bed, the release detailed. Curry then reportedly got on top of her and threatened to hit her if she didn’t give it to him.

When the victim attempted to yell for help, the release stated, Curry covered her mouth and then began choking her.

The owner of the residence told police he woke up and called police after hearing the two fighting and seeing Curry on top of the victim, the release detailed.

Curry was charged with assault by strangulation, a third-degree felony.

Jail records show Curry was taken to the Ector County Detention Center Thursday and has a $25,000 bond.
