Man charged with stolen firearm during traffic stop

An expired registration led to a man being charged with a stolen firearm Wednesday.

Police conducted a traffic stop around 3:32 p.m. Wednesday in the 2000 block of North County Road West due to an expired registration, an OPD press release said.

The driver identified himself as 20-year-old Ivan Rodriguez, the release detailed, and officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from his vehicle.

Officers found Rodriguez to be in possession of a loaded handgun, the release said, which had been reported stolen out of Midland.

Rodriguez was charged with theft of a firearm, a state jail felony.

Jail records show Rodriguez was taken to the Ector County Detention Center Thursday and released the same day on a $15,000 bond.
