A man was arrested by Odessa police Tuesday on charges related to an investigation into stalking.

Rhett Butler, 44, was arrested and charged with third-degree-felony stalking, according to an Odessa Police Department news release.

The release states a theft was first reported to the department in early April, when a 43-year-old woman reported that her ex-spouse, identified as Butler, stole five exterior light bulbs from her front yard on April 3.

The release also states the woman told police Butler had been communicating with her despite her call for him to cease all communication, also saying that he followed her to and from her residence and sent threatening text messages, placing her in fear for her life.

During the police’s investigation, Butler continued to follow and communicate electronically with the woman, the release states, and based on facts and circumstances presented during the investigation, detectives obtained a stalking warrant for Butler.

Butler was arrested around 9 a.m. Tuesday and taken to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center. Jail records indicate Butler was released on a $25,000 bond on Wednesday.
