Man charged with assaulting wife, endangering child

Police charged a man Saturday after he reportedly began choking his wife while she was trying to call 9-1-1 and holding their 9-month-old child.

Officers were called about a domestic disturbance around 5 p.m. Saturday in the 6400 block of Opal Drive, an Odessa Police Department news release stated.

Police interviewed a 23-year-old victim and her husband, 36-year-old Roberto Ruiz Jr., the release detailed. While the victim was holding their child, Ruiz reportedly chased her to their neighbor’s front door while she was trying to call 9-1-1.

Ruiz then reportedly hung up the 9-1-1 call and began choking his wife to the point that she fell to the ground while she was trying to shield their infant child, the release stated.

While attempting to handcuff Ruiz, he reportedly tried to swing his fist towards the arresting officer the release detailed, but was eventually placed into custody. An emergency protective order was placed against Ruiz and Child Protective Services was notified.

Ruiz was charged with endangering a child, a state jail felony, assault by strangulation, a third-degree felony, interfering with emergency communications, a class A misdemeanor, and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.

Jail records showed Ruiz was taken to the Ector County Detention Center Sunday and had four bonds totaling $25,500.
