A man is in custody following a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle that ended in a major crash Tuesday evening.

Ector County deputies initiated a traffic stop around 4 p.m. at 26th Street and Mockingbird Lane on a vehicle reported stolen, an Ector County Sheriff’s Office news release said.

The suspect, 25-year-old Nicholas Howell, attempted to evade officers, initiating a high-speed pursuit that lasted around 30 minutes, the release stated.

Howell reportedly rear ended a white pick-up truck, causing it to veer off and hit a telephone pole near Gage Street and Dixie Boulevard, before being stopped near 42nd Street and Dixie Boulevard, the release stated.

The release detailed the driver of the pick-up truck was taken to Medical Center Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

ECSO charged Howell with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading in a vehicle, state jail felonies.

Howell was taken to the Ector County Detention Center and no bond has been set yet.
