On April 15, ECISD’s Advanced Academic Services hosted the 2023 Chess for Champs Annual GT Chess Tournament at Odessa High School.

Two hundred and fifteen 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students participated.

Students played four 20-minute rounds back-to-back. After taking a quick lunch break, 29 qualifying students returned for finals. The students played through an elimination bracket of 10-minute games until they had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finalists.

The last round of the day was played by our grade-level winners. They were competing for the Grand Master and Jr. Grand Master title. At the end of the day, Miryala Nandan (3rd grade, Reagan) won the title of Junior Grand Master and Leonardo Pompa (5th grade, Travis) won the title of Grand Master. Admaris Nieto won the T-shirt design contest, and they proudly wore her design on the T-shirts.
