Twin Odessa girls were innocently playing near a fireworks stand in Odessa on July 3 when the unspeakable happened. The two 6-year-olds, Mya and Mia Coy, lost their lives when a car barreled through and struck the girls.

Police say 36-year-old Angelica Garcia of Midland was intoxicated when she drove her 2014 Chrysler 200 through a barricade and struck the girls.

Garcia was arrested and charged that day with two counts of intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle, a second-degree felony. She had two bonds totaling $70,000 and bonded out on Thursday, jail records show.

What a terrible time for this Odessa family to endure. The loss of two tiny lives must be a nightmare for their loving family members.

Nothing can ease the pain of such a tragedy but we were heartened to see that more than 800 different people helped raise around $50,000 through a Gofundme page.

We thank all of you who felt that pull to your heart and reached for your wallet. Nothing can bring those tiny and beautiful girls back. But surely there is some solace in knowing that so many people were touched by the tragedy and that they reached out to help this young family.

We are always amazed and humbled by the generosity of this community. It does mean something and it does support people who are surely going through the most difficult time of their lives.

Those two precious babies will be laid to rest today and we join all of you in offering our most heartfelt and sincere sympathy.

This community remains behind your grieving family and we hope that offers some light in this dark time.

>> Mia and Mya are survived by their parents Raul Coy Jr and Agueda Mendoza Coy and siblings Mali and Mireya Coy. Also, grandparents Raul Coy and Maria Teresa Coy and Juan Luis Mendoza and Guadalupe Mendoza.
