I myself am well aware that shot glasses, steins and beer mugs — even ones with etched monograms — aren’t the best choices for dining room decorations.

I know this, of course, because I am married to a beautiful woman who generally displays terrific taste — her choice of husbands notwithstanding.

Thanks to her, I am enlightened. I still have about 50 shot glasses and a handful of steins in our kitchen and dining room, but at least now I know how tacky I am. (That puts me one up on her since she has no clue how cheesy her car seat covers are).

What my better half doesn’t understand is that I’m not the only addle-brained male who wants to hang a Chicago Cubs banner in the master bedroom.

And I’m not the only guy with a clock with pool balls for numbers banished to the playroom.

I’m also fairly certain she’s been calling the satellite company in an effort to get all the ESPN channels blocked. Luckily she keeps getting male customer service representatives.

The good news in all this is I now have a chance to get a getaway of my own.

Lifetime Products is sponsoring the Backyard Guy Getaway Contest.

“A guy getaway is a place where men can let go of the everyday stress and relive their childhood memories of collecting baseball cards, building model airplanes or just hanging out with the guys,” said Sam Martin, author of “Manspace: A Primal Guide To Marking Your Territory” and judge of the Backyard Guy Getaway Contest. “It gives men a place to call their own and serves as an expression of their identity.”

I don’t know about all that, but I do know I wouldn’t mind winning an outdoor storage shed from Lifetime Products and $2,500 in cash to outfit my backyard shed however I choose. Like with multiple locks to keep out unwanted visitors.

Winning is a two-step proposition — something any self-respecting Texas male should be able to handle.

First, I have to explain in 250 words or less — less than half as many words as I waste here each week — on why I need Backyard Guy Getaway. The contest materials suggest entries include how the space would be outfitted and/or themed and how it would be used. Entrants can also submit no more than three photos (optional) that showcase the items you or the person you’re nominating would put in their guy getaway.

Once that’s done, three finalists will be selected based on the creativity and persuasiveness of their entries. The finalists will have $2,500 and about three weeks to erect the shed and outfit it in the manner they choose.

One guy will win $10,000 for creating the Ultimate Guy Getaway. The judge is the “manspace expert” who wrote the book I mentioned.

and enter yourself or nominate somebody else.

I thought about nominating some of my poker night buddies, but here’s why I didn’t:

>> Don’s wife has already given him the garage.

>> Freddy is the River Rat and would rather have a boat.

>> Randy is Our Favorite Aggie, but he’s still an Aggie.

>> Mark, Landon, Jeremy, Trey, The Kid, Juice, Jeff and Greg (aka Timex) are all single and can already do what they want.

>> I don’t even know Domino’s or Unicracker’s real names.

>> Mike’s already working on a space — when his wife lets him.

>> Kay isn’t a guy.

>> Junior’s an Ohio State fan.

Besides, I plan on winning.
