Teaching junior high science for ECISD is my latest adventure in life. There is no martyred cause in this effort, but know that I do enjoy sharing knowledge and experience with youngsters.

Allow me to preclude any nonsense or harshness in this forum entry by saying that most students are good kids. Also, many teachers are good folks, some parents and principals are OK and even a few top administrators and school board members know the difference between a groove and a rut.

Those latter-mentioned administrators and school board members, with no problems or distractions whatsoever, are working diligently to make my job easy.

I must however, beg someone’s attention to a matter or two.

Consider the last two or three school boards, the last three superintendents, 80 or so assistant superintendents and principals and the coming and going of multitudes of teachers … all this during my decade of service.

During those few years, my duties have changed from one subject prep to two, five classes to six, scheduled teacher teaming to nothing and parent relations to general frustration.

Add to these changes no less than a 20 percent student load increase. All this, no doubt, is not uncommon to others in our district.

With all the above described progress and change, overall TAKS results for Odessa's secondary schools continue to lag behind the state's average scores. And our great state of Texas is hardly a frontrunner in American academia. Kinda sad, ain’t it!

God help us.
