NAX: Christmas needs a bit of a jump start in Bubba's mind
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 9:17 am

Bubba Gravelhauler was insistent that I drop by the Crawl on Inn, even though I don’t really have need for the services offered there.

NAX: As a fantasy season went, points were made and lost
Updated: September 07, 2012 - 6:14 pm

So I guess no holiday season is complete without a somewhat trivial yet necessary tale of woe. You know, like a Christmas tree disaster or some baking failure.

NAX: Maybe we don't need a guide featuring insults for dummies
Updated: September 07, 2012 - 6:15 pm

Quite honestly, some civility has been lost in recent years. We’ve somehow lost the ability to insult our fellow human beings with class.

NAX: As roles go, this grandiose giant had plenty to go around
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 7:38 am

Well, that is a bummer — Dandy Don Meredith no longer among us. Of course, we hadn’t seen much of the man lately. He was living the quiet life in Santa Fe (albeit with health problems) and really didn’t have much inclination or reason to get back in public life.

Sunday 12/05/2010
NAX: Lots of folks make a stand on a big Christmas symbol
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 7:38 am

Somehow, it always seems like events surrounding Christmas come down to items involving reality. Matters of artificiality vs. the real thing are just going to have to happen.

Wednesday 12/01/2010
NAX: Holidays are a little much, and include a lot of munch
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 7:38 am

Perhaps we’ve let this whole holiday food thing get a little out of hand. After all, we keep finding new ways to cook turkeys and hams and all those delicious side items that go along with the main courses.

NAX: Once again, moving forward requires the right attitude
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 7:44 am

NAX: Cutting back on spending sometimes isn't that easy
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 7:45 am

Like it or not, it’s all about the bucks these days. And that’s probably going to be even more intense as we move forward.

NAX: Football fortunes have Bubba down in the dumps
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 7:44 am

My buddy Bubba Gravelhauler hasn’t exactly been keeping in real close touch since I was diagnosed with cancer. But then we don’t exactly hang out at the same places anymore. I’m doing chemo, and he’s doing longnecks.

Wednesday 11/10/2010
NAX: Moving the hours around really is a waste of time
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 7:45 am

OK, anybody want to leap out there and put up a spirited argument as to why this country, for the most part, still is going through the motion by changing the time an hour twice a year?

Nax: A new direction doesn't always equate to miracles
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:27 am

Isn’t it interesting that “change” always seems to be a part of the political agenda, yet, as a whole, most people aren’t really enthused about exploring new challenges.

NAX: Suddenly, sounds of silence soothe the surroundings
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 7:45 am

What’s that sound? Oh yeah, it’s just business as usual — on television, on the radio and in public events. It’s not exactly silence, because we’ll be listening to the analysts overhyping all that went on for the past few months for the next few weeks. But at least that beats what we’ve had to deal with recently.

NAX: The real scoop on Odessa's past probably is worthy
Updated: August 31, 2012 - 6:34 am

The idea of writing the history of Odessa — and not just the official or authorized version — has been suggested to me many times through the years.

Nax: Times have changed when looking for after-hours fun

Nax: In a new world, you just have to make adjustments
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:24 am

Nax: Those reasons to keep heading in the right direction
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:23 am

The information guy who 'got it' has gone away
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

This is a little late, but it needs to be said. I come to praise the recently retired Glen Larum, who served admirably as the Texas Department of Transportation “mouthpiece” for the better part of two decades.

When you get down, getting up is the next big step
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

OK, I’m ready to discuss in depth why I pretty much disappeared from the scene for the better part of a week. See, it came down to an illness I can’t understand or very much describe and some fairly surreal moments that don’t make much sense.

Sunday 08/15/2010
NAX: The future wasn't now, or even later, in this deal
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:23 am

It wasn’t that long ago that Odessa and the surrounding area were consumed in the pursuit of something called FutureGen, an idealistic concept that would transform a coal-burning plant into a “zero-emissions” power generating facility.

Wednesday 08/11/2010
What about some reality involving Odessa's night scene?
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

For several years now, reality television shows have been all the rage. Sports teams have opened their locker rooms to the cameras, while all sorts of celebrities have joined in “survivor” tests, “great” races and even business competitions to gain the favor of Donald Trump.

In slow times, news has to be manufactured
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

OK, it’s officially the dog days of summer. The temperature may not be exactly soaring (anything under 100 in late July is mild in these parts), but when anything resembling news is hiding in the shade …

Sunday 07/25/2010
Bubba’s not shy, but he could be a retiring guy
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

My buddy Bubba Gravelhauler drove up to the Crawl On Inn just after I had parked. It was noteworthy because I’d never beaten him to his favorite watering hole. And this was well after business hours.

Tuesday 07/20/2010
An ‘infuridating’ encounter
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

Nostalgia bidders turned out to be quick on the Trigger
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

OK, for better or worse, somebody just spent more than a quarter of a million bucks to buy a stuffed horse. And the same bidder also coughed up $35,000 for a matching mounted dog.

Sometimes you just have to call out your cell phone
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

The best fathers find ways to communicate with their kids
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

First of all, let me say that I stand behind the rather commercialized traditions of honoring moms and dads with their own days. And hey, having businesses make some bucks off kids trying to do a little apologizing for all the trouble they’ve caused their parents through the years is a nice concept.

Wednesday 06/16/2010

Tuesday 06/08/2010
It doesn't hurt to hang on to the old good vibrations
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

NAX: Baseball always has surprises to offer fans
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:23 am

The talk of the baseball world the last few days should have been the retirement of Ken Griffey Jr., a class act during the steroid era when many of the game’s top performers embarrassed themselves with their suspicious behavior.

A couple of crucial items that get you around in a hurry
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

When you get to thinking about it, computers have pretty much traveled the same road as the automobile. And, of course, we’re not talking literally. That would be silly.

Sunday 05/30/2010
Bubba's brief rewind just can't quite span the ages
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:41 am

My schedule had been busy enough lately that I had a nice little Bubba break for a month or so. But then I felt compelled to run by the Gravelhauler hangout, otherwise known as the Crawl On Inn, just to check in with my pal.

You can't stress enough the need to get far away
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:35 am

In the high-pressure world that has evolved over the past few decades, you tend to see more circles under eyes and run across more people who appear to be coiled springs, ready to fly apart at any time.

Today's hostilities turn out to be tomorrow's old news
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:35 am

Meandering is fine as long as it remains occasional

Spring brings many miracles, including baseball luck
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:35 am

Ah, it’s so nice to have an old friend back. Like chirping birds and brightly blooming trees, this familiar mainstay makes spring ever so much more special. All of the above are signs that the dull, depressing days of winter have given way to brightness and freshness.

Four grand is just another step along the way
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:35 am

So, it seems like a nice round number to send March out like a lion. Just for the record, this is my 4,000th column since giving up the long hours as a sportswriter for the long-windedness of being a local general interest columnist back in 1982.

The big picture of Odessa told in tidbits
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:35 am

Anyone who has spent time in Odessa probably would agree that the place has had more than its share of characters through the years. A town that didn’t conform to normalcy, this community was a haven for mavericks, risk takers and people who spoke their mind.

Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:21 am

Who says the Tooth Fairy isn’t real? Santa’s not just a symbolic Christmas creature. And, by golly, the Easter Bunny might have more in that basket than eggs and candy.

NAX: Why not lie in wait in hopes of punishing all the liars?
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:21 am

It’s sort of like being caught outside during a hailstorm as the gloomy economic news just keeps beating our spirits to a pulp.

NAX: The mind is a fine place to bury all those nice illusions
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:21 am

NAX: Football's ending, but some more fast action is on the way
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:22 am

NAX: To see a big game in real style, settle for a big screen
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:21 am

Each year, the Super Bowl just seems to get a little more out of control. No, not the game itself. Football is football. But the madness surrounding the event is astounding. Between the commercialism (this is where the celebrities and former athletes come to make some extra bucks by hawking merchandise and calling attention to causes) and the media circus, it’s a wonder anybody even pays attention to the reason for the annual spectacle.

NAX: The light at the end of the tunnel probably is another train
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:21 am

OK, everybody has intervals when it feels like you have a dark cloud hanging over your head all the time. This imagery comes from an old comic strip that included a character who was always drawn with stormy weather above him.

NAX: Presidential reputations often are difficult to maintain
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:21 am

It’s the ultimate American dream. You grow up with the rather ridiculous notion that “anyone” can become the president of the United States.

NAX: A slow time of year seems to give your mind time to spoil
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:21 am

You’d think we’d all be ready for this time of year. After all, bleak always arrives and settles in for a nice long stay once the new wears off the newest year.

Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:22 am

When you write for a living, you really begin to appreciate the chance to play with all those words that you use over and over again.

NAX: All-Sun Bowl Team will have Odessa and West Texas flavor
Updated: August 28, 2012 - 4:19 am

Many Odessans remember the late Joe Biggs for a lot of different reasons, but most of them probably would be surprised that he made a big enough impression when he played football for Hardin-Simmons in the Sun Bowl to be recognized for his accomplishments a half-century later.
