Odessa Jeree Barnett, 80, a longtime resident of Odessa passed away on Monday, June 11, 2007. In celebration of the wonderful and giving life of this remarkable woman, a memorial service will be held in Odessa, TX on Thursday, June 14 at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m.

Jeree was born on February 18, 1927 to John and Wilma Bunn of Ardmore, Oklahoma. She moved to Tyler, Texas as a small child and was a member of the Queen’s Court of the Tyler Rose Festival. She attended the University of Texas where she met and married the love of her life, J.L. “Barney” Barnett. They celebrated their 57th anniversary this past October.

While at the University, she became a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority of which she has remained involved. Among her many other activities, she was elected First Lady of Odessa in 1978 for services and leadership in the community. She received the John F. Kaemph Award for outstanding leadership in the Youth and Government Program in 1988. Jeree was presented a community service award by Heritage Foundation in 2004 for the Arts and Excellence. Jeree was on the Board of Directors for United Way of Odessa, Planned Parenthood, Samaritan Counseling Center, Junior League and Family YMCA State Youth and Government Program. She was a deacon and elder of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and a moderator of Presbyterian Woman.

Her passion and flair for color and nature was the emphasis behind her successful art career. Jeree’s award winning work has hung in numerous group exhibits as well as in many area and national juried shows. She has been one of the featured artists in the art tour sponsored by the Odessa Council of Arts and Humanities since 1998. She is a founding member of the Ellen Noël Art Museum of the Permian Basin on which she has served as a trustee for 20 years.

Jeree is survived by her husband, J.L. “Barney” Barnett, daughters, Susan Hall and her husband Keith of Tulsa, OK, Diane Delorey of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and son John Barnett and his wife, Paula, of Odessa. Grandchildren are Lauren Barnes of Tulsa, OK, Lindsay Potter of Chicago, IL, Mackenzie Barnett of Odessa, Tyler Eberle of Plano and Lacey Eberle of Allen. A new great-granddaughter, Addison Potter, was born in Chicago on March 27th.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Ellen Noël Art Museum, 4909 E. University Blvd., Odessa, 79762, or the Jeree Barnett Memorial Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4901 Maple, Odessa, 79762.

Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
