Odessa Ildefonsa Stewart Gay, age 92 of Odessa, passed away on October 12, 2007 at the Hospice House. She was born on January 23, 1915 in San Carlos, Mexico to Cleofa Pena and Macedonio Granado. She was the oldest of seven children. At an early age, she and her family moved to the United States and settled in Fort Stockton.

Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with Fr. Mark Woodruff officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. A rosary will be said on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at Hubbard-Kelly.

“Ilda” or “Poncha”, as she was known to her family and friends, grew up with such a determination to seek a better life. One of her greatest desires was to learn to be a pilot and fly a plane. Her solo was from Fort Stockton to Midland.

She married Bill S. Stewart and had six children. In 1960 Bill passed away. There was another goal that she sought, in May of 1962, she was sworn in as a Citizen of The United States of America. How proud she was, always active in politics and always voting when it came time.

As the children grew and married, they began their own families. She became known as “Grandmother” or “Lita”. The most gifts that she could give her family were her faith in God and to always strive for the best in life. She later married Jim Gay and they had twenty-five adventurous years, always on the road and looking for that next “pretty spot”.

She leaves a legacy that includes her daughter, Betty Jane Stewart of Sugarland, TX; sons, William G. Stewart and wife Kathy of Ft Worth, Peter Stewart Sr and wife Nancy of Houston, John G. Stewart and wife Debbie of Odessa, Roy Gene Stewart and wife Diane of San Antonio and Edward Lee Stewart of Odessa; brothers, Joe Granado of Fort Stockton and Fred Granado of Haskel; a sister, Mary Vela of Galveston; (20) grandchildren and (17) great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, William S. Stewart in 1960 and James Marvin Gay in 2001; also preceding her are two brothers and a sister.

Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
