GOOD NEWS: Sul Ross names ASC Newcomer of the Year

ALPINE Sul Ross State University sophomore first baseman Tim Johnson has been named American Southwest Conference Newcomer of the Year in an announcement on May 8.
In addition to his Newcomer of the Year accolade, Johnson was also named to the 2019 ASC First Team All-Conference team.
Johnson leads the ASC with a .443 batting average. His 2019 average also ranks him third in Sul Ross single season batting averages since the Lobos joined the NCAA in 1997.
Johnson’s .779 slugging percentage and .517 on-base percentage also sits him atop the ASC rankings and third and second respectively in All-Time Sul Ross single season records.
He registered a third ASC-best 66 hits on the season and also a third ASC-high 49 RBI. He also leads the conference with 19 doubles and a third-ASC-high 116 total bases along with a team-leading nine home runs.
Johnson secured an inside-the-park grand slam home run in an 18-7 victory over defending National Champion U.T. Tyler in Sully’s regular season finale at Kokernot Field, April 27.
Senior outfielder Wesley Moss was named to the 2019 ASC Second Team All-Conference squad.
Moss broke three Sul Ross records in 2019.
He finished his career with a record-setting .471 on-base percentage including a third ASC-high .503 OBP in 2019. As a junior, Moss set an American Southwest Conference single season on-base percentage record of .605.
Moss also set the Sul Ross record in career runs scored in 2019 at 155 surpassing Johnny Campos who held the record at 148.
He also broke the all-time Sul Ross record for most career hits at last weekend’s ASC Red Bracket Tournament. Moss wrapped up his collegiate campaign with 226 hits surpassing All-American Javier Arrieta’s by four.
For the season, he led the conference in stolen bases at 26-of-31. Moss ranked third in the ASC with 27 walks.
Other Lobos receiving post season recognition include senior third baseman Chris York who was named to the ASC Third Team All-Conference team.
York is the all-time sacrifice fly producer at Sul Ross with 19. He also leads the ASC in 2019 with 10 SAC flies. He registered a .393 batting average for the season.
York posted a third team-high 44 hits and a second team-best 14 doubles and two homers. He tied teammate and fellow senior Jacob Pool for a second team-high 30 RBI with 27 runs scored.
Freshman second baseman Bo Justin Martinez, senior shortstop Joseph Sanchez, Pool and sophomore designated hitter Jorge Marquez were selected as 2019 ASC Honorable Mentions.
Martinez finished with a .329 batting average and accounted for 29 hits including a double, a triple, 13 RBI and 21 runs scored.
Pool wrapped up his Sul Ross career with 35 hits in 2019. He added seven doubles, a triple, four homers, 30 RBI and 22 runs scored.
Marquez secured a .362 batting average and clubbed seven doubles and a homer. He sported 15 RBI and 25 runs scored.
