GOOD NEWS: Midland College awards winners

MIDLAND On April 28, Midland College (MC) held its annual Nonfiction Writing Contest awards ceremony via Zoom videoconferencing.

Contest finalists read excerpts from their entries in the categories of feature stories, narrative non-fiction and research essays/reports.

First, second and honorable mention winners were announced for each category.

Feature Stories

Judged by Lisa del Rosso, writer and instructor at New York University.

First place: Kiley Wilkins, “Finding My Voice.”

Second place: Aileen Muñoz, “How My Mom Brought Me Closer to My Culture Through Dance.”

Honorable Mention: Alexandra James, “A Memoir on Land Maps.”

Narrative Nonfiction

Judged by Katherine V. Wills, Professor of English, Department Director (Chairperson) and Campus Poet at Indiana University Purdue University-Columbus.

First place: Madison Porter, “Standing Out.”

Second place: Mariam Falana, “Cultivation and Tutelage: The Burnt Extremity.”

Honorable Mention: Faith Dolan, “Paradox.”

Research Essays/Reports

Judged by Paullett Golden, Professor in the English department at the American Military University (American Public University System).

First place: Weston Wilber, “I Can See the End in the Beginning Michelangelo Buonarroti: The Creator of Every Viewer’s Journey.”

Second place: Mariam Falana, “Cultural Constructs of Integrative Masculinity”
