On Jan. 27, an Ector County jury sentenced David Dowler of Midland to life in prison for the 1987 murder of Leza Chandler, an Odessa school teacher. He was also charged with two other homicides for giving lethal doses of cyanide to Lisa Blythe Krieg and Juan Antonio Castillas.

Bank fraud: Odessa real estate developer Louis Rochester was found guilty of bank fraud and ordered to pay restitution and perform community service.

Pulitzer Prize: The Odessa American’s coverage of the Baby Jessica rescue in Midland earned a Pulitzer Prize for OA photographer Scott Shaw. Shaw shot the photo on the last frame of the roll of film in his camera, having spent the last 22 hours waiting for the rescue moment.

Tragedy: On Aug. 12 a Midland Boy’s Club van collided with a semi-truck near Sweetwater and killed five children and injured 13 others.

Rejected: For the second year, voters rejected proposals for renovations at the Ector County Coliseum.

Elections: There were fiery local debates among county commissioner candidates and those vying for district attorney. Democrat Gary Garrison defeated the incumbent Eric Augesen for the DA’s seat.

Barely missed it: The Permian Panther team that would be chronicled in Buzz Bissinger’s “Friday Night Lights” loses 14-9 to Dallas Carter in the state semifinals.

>>Super Bowl XXII ends with the Redskins over the Broncos 42-10. A former Hobbs (New Mexico) Eagle and Texas Tech Red Raider, Timmy Smith, had his day in the sun. He scored a record 204 rushing yards and was a huge part of the Redskins’ magical 35-point second quarter and eventual win.

>>Sandy Lyle wins the 52nd Masters.

>>On May 14, Larry Mahoney, a drunk driver in a truck traveling the wrong direction on a highway, collided with a church bus and 27 people were killed and 34 injured.

>> On Aug. 28 at an air show in Ramstein, Germany, 67 spectators and three pilots were killed and 346 injured when an mid-air collision took place.

>>Tom Browning pitches a perfect game.

>>World AIDS Day is first observed.

>>On Dec. 21, Pan Am Flight 103, also commonly called the Lockerbie bombing, killed 243 passengers and 16 crew members who were on a flight from London Heathrow to New York’s JFK.

>>More than 25,000 are killed in an earthquake in the Kirovakan area of northern Armenia. The massive quake left a half a million people homeless.
