College volleyball: UTPB picks up two victories

CANYON UTPB’s volleyball team picked up its first two victories of the season Saturday at the 2010 BritKare Lady Buff Classic.

Jamie Rodell and Terra Peil had double figures in kills as UTPB beat East Central (Okla.) 25-12, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22 and New Mexico Highlands 25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 25-11.

“I was pleased with the team’s performance,” UTPB head coach Steve Aicinena said. “We made adjustments that we were incapable of (Friday during two losses). The weekend was a good learning experience.”

Against East Central, Rodell had 14 kills, Peil had 13 and Keeley Brogdon had 11 kills while Danae Eckart had 21 digs. Also, Areil Fralick had 20 assists and Sara Torres had 19.

Then in UTPB’s closing match against New Mexico Highlands, Peil had 11 kills and Rodell had 10 while Brogdon and Alex Genung chipped in nine each. Eckart added 16 digs and Genung had 12, with Torres leading in assists with 23 in addition to Fralick’s 10.

The Lady Falcons open their home schedule at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Falcon Dome by playing Lubbock Christian University, which went 4-0 in the same tournament — including a victory against host West Texas A&M.
