College basketball: UTPB teams split in Kansas

>> Falcons get road win: In Wichita, Kan., Quintan Lipkins scored 23 points to help the UTPB men’s basketball team beat Newman University 77-66 in a Heartland Conference game Saturday night.

Lipkins’ layup got UTPB even at 51-51 with 10 minutes, 24 seconds remaining, and Justin Bailey made a layup with 10:07 left to put UTPB ahead for good at 53-51. The Falcons (4-10 overall, 2-1 conference) led by as many as 12 points at 73-61 with 2:03 left.

Bailey had 15 points for UTPB, which shot 46.3 percent from the field. Robert Harris had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Cole Elliott scored 17 points for Newman (8-5, 0-3). The Jets made 9-of-35 3-point tries.

>> Lady Falcons lose 15th straight: In Wichita, Kan., Gretchen Berns scored 16 points to help Newman University beat UTPB 91-63 in a Heartland Conference women’s basketball game Saturday night and hand the Lady Falcons their 15th consecutive defeat.

Newman (3-13, 1-2) used a 20-3 run to take a 22-6 lead in the first half, and the Jets built a 41-25 lead at halftime. They eventually built the lead to 32 points in the second half.

UTPB (1-16 overall, 0-3 conference) made 11-of-12 free throws but shot 26.9 percent from the field.

UTPB’s Crystal Johnson made six 3-pointers and scored 27 points in her return from a two-game. Tomisha Martin missed the game because of academic ineligibility.

Melissa Borckleman had 15 points for Newman (3-13, 1-2), which outrebounded UTPB 60-35.
