Track and field: Class 1A state meet notebook
>> GALINDO GETS FIFTH: Iraan's Ector Galindo felt good about his chances in the boys discus heading into the UIL Class 1A State Track and Field Championships.
Strong workouts gave Galindo confidence that he could be bringing a medal home to the Permian Basin.
However, the senior had to settle for a fifth-place showing at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium after throwing 154 feet.
"I came out here and thought I'd get a good throw in," said Galindo, whose best effort this season was 170-3. "I just didn't get one. I came out here prepared and everything and just didn't have it in me, I guess."
Strawn's Johnathan Lindsey threw 172-1 to defend his title and Bartlett's Ted Crews was second at 163-3. The third-place medal was won by Roscoe's Caden Smith with his effort of 158-9.
Galindo had moved into fourth with his toss of 154 on his third attempt. But the best of his final three throws was a closing 149-11.
"I thought I was building momentum when I threw 154," Galindo said. "It just didn't go good from there. I was at least trying to get in the 160s and get a medal and just couldn't get it."
Galindo plans to attend Angelo State University and continue throwing the discus for the Rams.
>> TOUGH DAY: McCamey's Megan Mesa proved she was one of the best Class 1A girls discus throwers in the state last month by winning the Region I-1A Championships.
The recent graduate had a tough day, however, in her first state meet.
Mesa threw 94-8 on her second attempt and settled for an eighth-place finish after failing to get another throw in the field.
Unlike many of the other throwers, Mesa has spent little time training in the discus while competing in many track and field events in addition to other sports.
Quanah's Tara Riley won the title with a 128-2 on her final attempt while Rochelle's Bonnie Richardson was second at 126-9.
