Trevor Brazile of Decatur and Patrick Smith of Midland are no strangers to team roping fans, comprising one of the top duos in the sport. They were on hand Tuesday to face Andrews' JoJo Lemond and partner Martin Lucero in the team roping match and Brazile and Smith strutted their stuff.
The pair roped eight head in 87.56 seconds, easily defeating Lemond and Lucero's 108.14-second total.
"It was nice to come back home," Smith said. "This is my home rodeo and before I was even competing, I was buying a ticket to see the roping. It was great to have all my friends and family here tonight."
>> Open champions: In the SandHills Invitational Roping event, Charly Crawford of Llano and Russell Cardoza of Oakdale, Calif., finished first with a time of 34.27 seconds for five head, netting the partners $13,606.
David Key of Caldwell and Marty Becker of Edmonton, Alberta, were second at 35.20, good for $9,072 and Coleman Proctor and Jett Hillman finished in 35.35 seconds, earning $7,182.
>> World champion prevails: Stran Smith reached the pinnacle of the tie-down roping community when he used a runner-up effort in the 10th performance, along with a first in the average, to win the 2008 world championship in December at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
On Tuesday night in the Shawn McMullan Memorial team-roping match against Jeff Chapman, Smith showed world championship form, roping his four steers in 39.60 seconds.
Chapman, who won the 10th performance in December, finished his runs in 78.36 seconds after missing his third and four steers.
>> Juniors showcased: This year's junior calf-roping match featured two of the top high school senior ropers - Klay Kirkes of Carlsbad, N.M., and Ross Williams of San Saba.
Williams struggled with his first two head, missing both for back-to-back 30-second penalties.
Despite catching his third calf in 23.73 seconds, his first two trips proved to be his undoing as Kirkes roped his first three head in 47.83 seconds. That meant that the New Mexico youngster couldn't be caught, even if he missed his final calf.
He did, but Kirkes' time of 77.83 seconds easily bested Williams' 93.80-second mark.
>> Rodeo back tonight: After a three-day break, the 76th SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo returns to the dirt at 7:30 p.m. at Ector County Coliseum.
This will be the first time that team roping will be in the arena, with Andrews native JoJo Lemond scheduled to compete.
