AUSTIN Permian Basin players dominated the action Thursday during the first round of the UIL Class 3A Girls State Golf Championships.
Defending champion Andrews shot a round of 305 for the team lead at Roy Kizer Golf Course, with senior Addison Long's 72 leading the way.
Morgan Dockery, a junior and the only player not on last year's state championship squad, followed with a 76, senior Jennifer Joyce provided a 77 from the No. 5 position and senior Kaylan Brownlee fired 80. The non-counting score for the Lady Mustangs was a very solid 81 by senior Desiree Gallegos.
Not far behind in the team race is Monahans, which shot a 313 in its first round at the state tournament since 2004.
"Hats off to Monahans," Andrews coach Mark Burgen said. "They played great and it's not going to be easy, but you don't expect it to be at the state championship. We'll go prepare and try to eliminate a few mistakes."
The Lady Loboes were led by sophomore Courtney Rutledge, who shot a personal-best round of 72. Shelbye Hill, also a sophomore, rallied for an 80, junior Victoria Moore shot 80 and junior Jordan Jernigan had an 81 while junior Allison Parks' 84 was not used for the team score.
Monahans played with the other three region runners-up but will play in the final group for today's final 18 holes along with Andrews, China Spring (328) and Castroville Medina Valley (328).
"That is wonderful," Monahans coach Becky Hix said of Rutledge's 72. "She is a great player, and like I've said, we have that depth on our team where anyone can go low and we like that."
In the individual standings, Long and Rutledge share the lead while Seminole junior Samantha Soto -- playing as a medalist -- stands one shot back at 73 along with Kaufman's Chantry McMahan and Frisco Wakeland's Taylor Newlin.
In other state golf events, the 3A boys tournament at Roy Kizer should be a shootout for the final round. Medina Valley A leads at 296, but Graham, Atlanta and Waco Robinson all are just one shot back at 297 and Longview Spring Hill is close behind at 301.
Waco Robinson's Chase Chapman shot a 70 and is the low boys medalist.
In Class 5A, the girls race also is tight with A&M Consolidated leading at 319, Southlake Carroll second at 320, Plano West third at 324 and Lubbock Coronado in fourth at 325. A&M Consolidated's Casey Grice leads the medalist standings with a 68 and Lubbock Coronado's Mariah Montoya is second at 74.
Plano West is atop the boys 5A team standings at 292, followed by The Woodlands at 297, Spring Branch Memorial and Austin Westlake at 298 and Houston Strake Jesuit at 299. Plano West's Ryan Dagerman is the low boys medalist witha 70.
