BOXING: Joey Alday Jr. earns national championship shot

IRVING Odessa’s Joey Alday Jr. defeated Steve Belmontes of Corpus Christi 5-0 Saturday in the 141-pound final at the Men’s State Boxing Tournament and will now represent Texas at the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships.
The national competition begins Feb. 27 in Fort Carson, Colo., and runs through March 3.
Alday’s dad and coach, Joe Alday, said his son won a tough fight.
“We were winning each round by three or four punches,” Joe Alday said.
Joey Alday Jr. is a 17-year-old junior at Odessa High School.
