Comments 0 | Recommend 0>> IN THE SANDHILLS INVITATIONAL OPEN: Matt Sherwood of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Jade Corkill of Fallon, Nev., caught five steers in 36.02 seconds on Tuesday to capture the title and the $13,680 first prize.
Jake Barnes (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Clay OBrien Copoer (Morgan Hill) were second in 38.72 seconds and won $9,120, while Steve Purcella (Hereford) and Kinney Dale Harrell (San Angelo) finished third in 38.88 seconds to earn $7,720.
>> IN THE 16TH SANDHILLS INVITATIONAL TEAM MATCH ROPING: Walt Woodard and Clay Tryan, the 2006 World Champion Heeler, caught eight head in 54.43 seconds to earn the $8,000 check for first place over Tee Woolman and Kory Koontz, who finished in 62.57 seconds.
Woolman and Koontz led after four head but missed a loop on their fifth steer and stopped the clock in 17.80 seconds to give Woodard and Tryan a nearly 10-second (33.94 to 43.73) lead, which they never relinquished.
>> IN THE 12TH SHAWN MCMULLEN MEMORIAL CALF ROPING: Stran Smith, who was a passenger in the car the night that a drunk driver caused the head-on accident that killed McMullen, tied four calves in 43.82 seconds to capture the $3,000 first prize over 2004 world champion Monty Lewis, who finished his runs in 48.11 seconds.
Lewis, who broke the barrier for a 10-second penalty on his third run, put the fastest run of the evening together on his final calf, stopping the clock in 8.00 seconds.
>> IN THE FIFTH ANNUAL JUNIOR CALF ROPING MATCH: Cody Burnett of Snyder used four consistent runs to capture the title — and a full scholarship to Odessa College — over Seth Mahaffey of Sweetwater.
Burnett used runs of 11.29, 11.68, 11.31 and 11.03 seconds for a total of 45.31, while Mahaffey finished his four runs in 46.41 seconds. Mahaffey had trouble with the wrap on his final calf.
