UTPB Roundup: Volleyball / Soccer
Comments 0 | Recommend 0>> Volleyball -- UTPB volleyball team goes 3-1: In Denton, the UTPB volleyball team posted a 3-1 record Friday and Saturday in the 2008 Texas Woman's Volleyball Tournament, including a victory against the host school and two five-set victories.
UTPB beat Texas Woman's University 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 on Friday behind 14 kills from Amithy Henry, eight by Bailey Marcus and double-figure dig performances from Ashley Alba (18), Henry (15) and Mica Lamprecht (13).
The Lady Falcons then lost 19-25, 17-25, 28-25, 25-19, 15-8 to Southwestern Oklahoma to close out Friday's play.
They came back, however, to beat Ouachita Baptist 25-14, 23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 15-4 and Cameron 25-19, 21-25, 26-28, 25-19, 25-11 on Saturday.
Against Ouachita Baptist, UTPB (4-4) got double-figure kills from Henry (13), Krystal Polk (13), Molly Atnip (11) and Marcum (10). Briana Ausdenmoore had 46 assists and 11 digs, while Lamprecht and Alba had 21 digs each.
The Lady Falcons play host to Angelo State at 7 p.m. Tuesday in their home opener.
>> Men's Soccer -- Falcons play at home today: The UTPB men's soccer team, which is 4-0 for the first time in program history, will look to extend its winning streak at 1 p.m. today against visiting St. Mary's in its Heartland Conference opener.
The Falcons are ranked seventh in the NCAA Division II South Central Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and take on a Rattler squad that lost to No. 1 Midwestern State in its season opener.
St. Mary's (0-2 overall, 0-1 conference), located in San Antonio, is coming off a 2-0 loss to Newman University on Friday in Wichita, Kan.
UTPB has received the production its expected from seniors Carlos Guillen (one goal, one assist) and Luis Paiva (two goals, one assists) and goalkeeper Gage Peterson (15 saves, two shutouts).
But the Falcons have also benefited from a newcomer, as freshman Nasser Abraham has a team-high three goals on seven shots. He scored both goals in the Falcons' 2-0 win in the home opener Thursday against Schreiner.
