Rodeo: SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo Notebook
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo is unique in that it has not one, but two different sessions of bull riding in each performance.
That means that 20 riders per night get a chance to rope themselves onto the back of nearly one ton of angry animal, hopeful for an eight-second ride and a score.
It also means extra work for the bullfighters and at this year's event, those bullfighters are highlighted in the Daisy Protection Bullfighting Tour's world championship.
After two days of competition, Team All American Dodge (Dave Jantzi and Toby Inman) is in first place with 160 points, with Team Mann Creek Buck n Bulls (Jay Brewer and Steve Wangler) and Team Cavenders (Andy Burelle and Dusty Tuckness) in second and third, respectively.
>> Next up: The rodeo goes dark in the Ector County Coliseum on Sunday and Monday, but timed events will begin running their slack competition beginning Monday in the Outback Arena on the Coliseum property.
The next event scheduled for the Coliseum is the Super Tuesday Roping, which begins at 10 a.m., with the final runs starting at 6:30 p.m.
There also will be a team roping match featuring six-time all-around champion Trevor Brazile and his partner, Patrick Smith, of Midland facing JoJo Lemond of Andrews and his partner for the evening, Martin Lucero.
Lemond and Lucero recently competed together at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, but will rope with different partners this season.
The rodeo will return to action Wednesday night for four consecutive nights of performances.
>> Turned out: Dan Etbauer is one of the pickup men at this year's Stock Show and Rodeo and his nephew, Trell, competed Saturday night in the saddle bronc event.
But Etbauer's brother, Billy, a five-time world champion, turned out before the competition and didn't make a third straight trip to the Permian Basin to start his season.
>> Moving up: With the second performance came the first time for the leaderboard to change in all the events and two athletes were able to move to the top Saturday night.
In bareback riding, former Odessa College Wrangler Ryan Gray rode Dust Devil to an 84-point score to move past Cody DeMers (82).
Then, in barrel racing, Jana Bean of Fort Hancock survived the cloverleaf in 14.23 seconds to move into the top spot, with Cassie Moseley of Farwell dropping to second with her 14.45 mark from Friday.
