Bringing the bulls worked so well last year that Broken Arrow Rodeo of Odessa is bringing them back this week - with a little extra competition added in.
The West Texas Black Gold PBR is scheduled to begin at 7:30 tonight at ACE (Andrews County Expo) Arena in Andrews when the first of 50 riders hops aboard their 2,000-pound adversary.
The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour series for the Professional Bull Riders will be back Wednesday night to conclude the competition.
Then, Thursday through Saturday, the cowboys and cowgirls of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association will take center stage for the West Texas Black Gold Rodeo.
It is beleived to be the first sanctioned rodeo in Andrews and features more than 600 competitors.
Tickets for the PBR event range from $25-$30, with the PRCA tickets available for $15.
Nikki Taylor of Broken Arrow Rodeo said that the support the PBR event is getting should ensure a top event.
"Former world champion Adriano Moraes is going to be one of our co-hosts and Mike White is going to be on hand to help drag bulls from the arena," Taylor said. "We have the top riders in the standings coming to compete and the PBR has sent some of the top bucking bulls for them to try and ride."
After the bulls have cleared the arena, it will be time for local favorites Dan Fisher, Tom Fisher and Vin Fisher Jr., to take center stage in the timed events at the PRCA rodeo.
Also expected to be on hand are five-time all-around world champion Trevor Brazile, Patrick Smith of Midland, Stran Smith and 19-time world steer roping champion Guy Allen.
"It's very exciting to be able to hold a PRCA event in Andrews," Taylor said.
"There are so many good ropers and cowboys in this area that it's great to be able to showcase them close to home."
