College basketball: Acosta named Co-Player of the Year

Blackshear tabbed as Defensive Player of the Year

SAN ANTONIO UTPB women’s basketball sophomore point guard Tammy Acosta has been named the Heartland Conference’s Co-Player of the Year.

Acosta, who shared the honor with Incarnate Word’s Nia Torru, finished third in the conference in scoring at 14.3 points per game, second with 4.7 assists and third in 3-point field-goal percentage at 35.8 percent.

Junior guard Miesha Blackshear, an All-Heartland Second Team member, was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year after leading the nation in steals at 4.7 takeaways per game.

Teammate Andrea Chavez received an honorable mention nod, and senior guard Justin Bailey received All-Heartland honorable mention honors for the men’s basketball team.
