Tennis: Permian has solid opening weekend

LUBBOCK Permian High School opened the team tennis season on a positive note, though its appearance in the Coursey Cup was shortened because of rain.

Permian beat Lubbock Monterey 12-7 on Friday and led Amarillo Tascosa 9-8 with two matches left to be completed when rain forced the dual match to be postponed until Saturday.

However, the rain did not let up and the remainder of the Tascosa dual, as well as duals against Amarillo High and Lubbock Coronado, were called off.

Permian went 9-0 in girls matches against Monterey and 8-1 in girls matches against Tascosa, with Charlotte Dawson, Bailey Slater and Carrie Lasater posting 4-0 records in the two duals.

Tai Lucero won three matches and had her fourth ended by the rain, while Elizabeth Espinosa won twice at No. 3 girls doubles.

Permian’s boys got singles victories from Doug Lasater and Teddy Yelley against Monterey and Kameron Mitchell against Tascosa. Lasater and Yelley also won at No. 1 boys doubles against Tascosa.
