Athletics: McCamey releases list of applicants

The McCamey Independent School District on Friday released a list of candidates for the vacant athletic director/head football coach post.

The district had set a deadline of midnight Friday, and a group of 52 people had applied as of 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Interviews are expected to be conducted next week, and the district hopes to present a recommendation at the board meeting May 15.

The group includes 10 applicants who are either athletics directors or head football coaches, including Craig Bales of Winters, Dave Westfall of Saratoga West Hardin, Rodney Dowell of Louise, Kelly Bonner of Eunice (N.M.), Mike Martinez of Fabens, John Anthony Ward of DeLeon, Gary Durham of Clayton (N.M.), Danny Adams of Winfield (Ala.), Gary Proffitt of Goldthwaite and Russell McDaniel of Diana New Diana.

Monahans assistant coach Chris McWilliams, former Seagraves head coach Cory Barnes, and McCamey assistants Mark Petross and Fred Rodgers are other candidates who are expected to be considered.

The position was created when Jay McWilliams was named the principal at McCamey at a school board meeting April 17.

McWilliams was 64-31 in eight seasons at McCamey. He led the Badgers to the 2006-07 Class 1A Division I state final against Alto.
