UIL state track and field: Live Permian update
Comments 0 | Recommend 0AUSTIN Permian junior Shartanae Swearingen finished second in the Class 5A girls 300-meter hurdles Saturday in the UIL State Track and Field Championships.
Swearingen is the first state medalist for the Permian girls in head coach Carl Chancellor's 10 seasons with the program.
She crossed the finish line in a personal-best time of 43.09 seconds, trailing only Lufkin's Amber Sellers, who won in 42.84.
Earlier, Swearingen was seventh in the 800 meters and she said she used a weather delay that lasted almost two hours to refocus on her second race.
Also, Permian senior Jesse Martinez was sixth in the boys 800 meters to earn a point.
Martinez was sixth in 1 minute, 55.83 seconds, which was slightly slower than his qualifying time. However, he ran past Dallas Skyline's Jodale Burkley and Lewisville's Joey Snelick down the stretch to earn the sixth position.
Snelick beat Martinez two weeks ago for the Region I-5A title in Lubbock.
Additionally for Permian's girls, Porshia Fobbs was eighth in the 100 hurdles.
Thunderstorms forced the meet to be postponed at 7:10 p.m., just before Swearingen was to run the 300 hurdles.
The meet was resumed shortly before 9 p.m.
