College baseball: Howard College picks up first win at NJCAA World Series
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Runey Davis smacked a walk-off solo homer off of Kyle Starratt in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Howard College a 4-3 victory over Western Nevada in the opening game of the NJCAA Division World Series Saturday.
Jerome Pena singled home two runs off of Howard starter Zach Neal in the third inning to give Western Nevada (45-13) the early lead, but a pair of Wildcats throwing errors in the fourth allowed Howard (59-1) to tie the score.
Neal, who gave up 12 hits and three walks in eight innings of work, allowed Western Nevada to take a 3-2 lead by scoring an unearned run in the top of the fifth.
The lead didn't last long. Monk Kreder tied the score with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, and both teams remained scoreless until Davis led off the bottom of the 11th by crushing a pitch over the left field fence.
Howard advances to take on Shelton State (Ala.) in a second-round game at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Shelton State (44-16) beat Iowa Western 16-6 on Saturday.
