Midland Lee coach James Morton said his team has done a great job of focusing on the task at hand this season, and Friday night was another case in point.
With a game against Abilene High looming next week, the Rebels dominated an overmatched Odessa High team 63-6 in a District 2-5A football game at Ratliff Stadium.
Midland Lee running back Jason McAfee was a one-man wrecking crew for the Rebels (4-1 overall, 3-0 district), finishing with 234 yards on 15 carries with a school single-game record seven touchdowns. He rushed for 171 yards and five TDs in the first half alone.
The Rebels amassed 433 yards on the night, 269 coming in the first half as they dominated Odessa High (0-6, 0-4) from the start.
“Midland Lee is a good football team and you can’t give a team like that good field position like we did in the first half,” OHS coach Ron King said. “I thought we did a better job in the second half, but we put ourselves in a hole again to start the game.
“We’ll go back and get to work; that’s one thing these kids have done all year is work hard and I know they’ll continue to do that. We’re a bit snakebit right now, but we are going to keep working hard and it’s going to come together for us.”
Odessa High, which has struggled all season offensively, turned the ball over two times, both in the first half that led to Midland Lee touchdowns.
Running back C.J. Eddison was a workhorse for the Bronchos, carrying the ball a school single-game record 46 times for 171 yards and one touchdown.
But Odessa High failed to get an air attack going for the third straight game, allowing the Rebels to move as many as nine men up on the line of scrimmage to stop the run on each play.
Odessa High finished with 22 yards in the air, making Eddison’s effort in the second half that much more impressive.
He had just 50 yards at halftime and then carried the ball 27 times for 121 yards after the break.
On the Bronchos’ final drive of the night, which stalled at the Midland Lee 10 after a failed fourth-down conversion, Eddison had his number called 13 straight times, gaining 56 yards.
“It’s nice, but it came from the line starting to click in the second half,” Eddison said. “They started to get it and really were working hard and I just had to run the ball.
“It’s disappointing because we work on things all week long and then on Friday night, it’s like we forget everything we were taught. We have to do a better job of coming out strong on offense early in the game, to gain some confidence.”
