Softball: Lady Bronchos stay unbeaten

SAN ANGELO The Odessa High Lady Bronchos wrapped up the first half of the District 3-5A softball schedule with a 5-1 victory over the San Angelo Central Lady Bobcats on Tuesday.

Rosie Lopez had a two run single when sixth-ranked Odessa High (19-0-3 overall, 6-0 district) broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the fifth inning.

OHS starter Hillary Phillips held Central (6-16, 1-5) to a run on two hits.

Odessa High has a two-game lead over Midland High and Midland Lee, while Abilene High and Permian are three games back.

"It took us a little while to get our bats going, but we're fine," OHS coach Stephanie Graham said. "We'll just keep coming out working hard every day."

Phillips (17-0) struck out  15 and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Kristy Smith went 2-for-2 and Courtney Cernoch was 2-for-3 as Odessa High's had 10 singles off Central's Cortnee Cote.

Samantha Martinez got the big inning started with a one out single and Keely Wharton reached on a bunt when Central tried to get the force out at second. Chelsey Walters then reached on a fielder's choice and pinch runner Amber Stevens scored on an error on the play. After Smith walked to load the bases, Lopez singled to drive in two runs.

A wild pitch and an error on the same play allowed Lopez and Kendra Dees, who had singled, to score the final two runs.
