Golf: Hardin wins Senior Women's West Texas title

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

The Senior Women's West Texas Championship match play trophy is quite familiar to Barbara Hardin, almost as familiar as the cardboard box in which it is placed.

Hardin took home her fifth title, this one a 6-and-5 victory Thursday at Odessa Country Club's Old Course, and the 1-foot tall trophy cup and box. The latter is filled with paper towels and plastic bubble wrap, adorned by duct tape, makeshift rope handles and a laminated card that reads, "Handle with care - Do not destroy this box."

Hardin won't, not after she battled the final day's wind, stronger than the ones leading to the four-day tournament's final round.

"I felt like my course management was really good today," said Hardin, who also won the title from 2003 to 2005 and last year. "Having played it for four days, you know where you need to be, not that you're always going to get there. The wind was different every single day we played."

The Lubbock resident edged Terry Dukes for the championship. Susan Collier, of Odessa, had a 5-and-4 victory in the first flight consolation bracket. Genevieve Gregory, of Odessa, had a 3-and-2 win in the ninth flight consolation group, and Jean Stinson, of Odessa, notched a 5-and-4 victory in the 10th flight consolation bracket.

"The greens were the hardest part, I thought," Hardin said. "There are places that fall off ... if you're not familiar with the course, it's going to be tough for you."
