Boys golf: Holly in the hunt at Region I-3A tournament

Andrews stands in third place as a team

LUBBOCK The Andrews boys golf team kicked off the Region I-3A Championships with a solid round on Tuesday.

Andrews shot 310, a score good enough that the Mustangs are in third place. The top two teams and top two individuals who don't play for the top two teams advance to state.

The Mustangs only have one problem.

Graham and Gatesville are playing at a different level. Graham shot a 4-under-par 284 at the Meadowbrook Canyon Golf Course to take the lead, and Gatesville is 12 strokes back at 296.

"We can't compete with 284," Andrews boys coach Jeff Miller said. "The course didn't play as easy as Graham and Gatesville made it look."

Both of the top two teams took advantage of the slow greens at Meadowbrook, which present a big change for the teams from the Permian Basin.

"Out here, most of the greens are lightning fast," Miller said.

Andrews senior Brett Holly had his problems with the greens Tuesday, but he still found a way to shoot a 1-under 71.

Holly is tied with Hunter Blanks of Glen Rose and Aaron Massey of Gatesville for second place behind Graham's Johnny Antle, who turned in a blistering 6-under 66.

"Brett just had a good solid round," Miller said. "He didn't make any putts, but he hit it pretty good."

Seminole and Fort Stockton are tied for ninth at 329, and Pecos is in a tie with Fredericksburg for 12th place at 337.

Monahans' Wade Roark and Anthony Armendariz had rough days after shooting 85 and 90, respectively.
