College golf: Wranglers in sixth with two rounds to go

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. The Odessa College golf team sits in sixth after two rounds at the NJCAA Division I Golf Championships.

OC shot a 300 on Wednesday at the Hampton Cove Golf Course's River Course for a two-round 602, one stroke behind fifth-place Hill College. McLennan Community College leads the 24-team field with a 584.

Sophomore Ross Leeds has the best Wranglers score at 146, tied for 11th individually. He shot a par-72 in Tuesday.

Sophomore Mark Penny and freshmen Mac Walrath are tied for 27th with a 150 each. Walrath turned in a 73 on Wednesday.

"We really haven't played bad," head coach Paul Chavez said. "One bad swing can lead to a double bogey in a heartbeat. We've had several circumstances where we have a double bogey and it turns things around."

Chavez said the course has received heavy rain in the months before the tournament, but it's slowly drying.

The Wranglers tee off at noon today.
