Central Hockey League: Jackalopes remain winless at home

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

No energy in the stands and just 20 minutes on the ice spelled doom for the Odessa Jackalopes Tuesday night.

Takin a one-goal lead after the first period, the Jackalopes watched the visiting Arizona Sundogs net four unanswered goals in the second period en route to a 7-4 victory at Ector County Coliseum.

The loss kept the Jackalopes (7-5-1) winless at home this season (0-4-1), while the Sundogs (6-7-1) have won the past two meetings in the Permian Basin.

Mike Ramsay, Sebastien Thinel, Collin Circelli and Mike Lesperance all scored for the Jackalopes, with Ramsay, Brian Swiniarski and Jeff Pierce all finishing with two assists.

"I thought we played a good first period, not a great first period," Jackalopes coach Paul Gillis said. "I thought we came out with some good energy.

"In the second period, I thought we gave them every goal they scored, either with mistakes by the goaltender or the defensemen. Somewhere between Texas (Brahmas) and here, we lost our defensive zone coverage and that's something that we work on every day."

The Jackalopes jumped on the Sundogs early, with Ramsay scoring just 4:19 into the contest. With Pierce carrying the puck down the slot, Ramsay raced to the left post and redirected the feed inside the post and past Arizona goaltender Marco Emond.

Thinel made it 2-0 for the home team at the 8:18 mark of the first period, gathering in a loose puck in the slot and turning to wrist the puck inside the right post.

Arizona cut the lead in half just 78 seconds later when Karl Sellan scored the first of two goals on the night. Sellan, standing at the right post, redirected Matt Suderman's pass from the left point past Jackalopes goaltender Alexandre Vincent.

The teams then traded goals to give the Jackalopes a one-goal lead heading into the first intermission.

It took the Sundogs less than four minutes to tie the game on Sellan's second goal of the night, this time banging away at a loss puck in front of Vincent.

It took Arizona just 17 seconds to take the lead for good when Adam Perry, taking advantage of some loose play in front of the Odessa net, snapped a loose puck back Vincent at the 4:14 mark.

When Tyler Liebel scored at the 10:10 mark, Gillis pulled Vincent and put in Juha Toivonen.

"What happened in the second period?" a somber Toivonen said after the game. "We can't have that; that was embarrassing."
