Premier Development League Soccer: Freeland to join Sockers

The addition of former Permian standout David Freeland highlighted the West Texas Sockers’ announcement Friday that they have eight players lined up for the 2012 season.

Freeland, a redshirt junior at Midwestern State, has scored 18 goals and tallied seven assists in two seasons with the Mustangs. He helped Midwestern State reach the Division II Final Four in 2010.

Like Freeland, James Duvcevski also is slated to play his first season with the Premier Development League soccer team this summer. Duvcevski made 17 starts in the fall as a junior at St. Peter’s, a Division I school in New Jersey.

Southern Methodist University sophomore Jaime Ibarra will likely be the Sockers’ starting goaltender. Ibarra played in three games for the Sockers a season ago and helped the Mustangs reach the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

Former Odessa High and UTPB players Jose Anchondo and Ulises Guillen also are scheduled to be part of the 2012 team.

The Sockers open the 2012 season with a home game against the El Paso Patriots on May 5. West Texas will play 16 regular-season games, each against a PDL Mid-South Division opponent.
