UIL state track and field update: Crane's Aguilar, Garcia win gold
Comments 0 | Recommend 0AUSTIN Crane High School's boys have won a pair of gold medals in the UIL Class 2A State Track and Field Championships.
Chris Aguilar won the pole vault title with a personal-best effort of 15 feet, 6 inches. The senior kept the gold medal in the family since older brother Chad Aguilar won the vault title last year, also at 15-6.
The previous best vault for Chris Aguilar was 14-7 and he cleared 14-9 to stay in the competition, 15-0 to ensure himself of a medal and 15-3 to take the lead. He then cleared his first attempt at 15-6 and won the gold when Teague's Andrew Irvin missed one attempt at 15-3 and two at 15-6.
"I just knew what I had to do what I was coached to do," Aguilar said. "I just did that and form-wise this is the best meet I've ever had."
Crane's second gold of the day came when junior Isidro Garcia took the crown in the 400 meters. Garcia, who had the best qualifying time coming in, won in 48.51 seconds, well ahead of Idalou's Jonathon Adkins (49.06).
The Crane girls got a fourth-place finish from Summer Sutherland in the high jump, a fifth-place finish from Chelsea Staggs and a fifth-place showing from Sutherland in the 300 hurdles.
Crane's boys also took sixth in the 400 relay.
With the 1,600 relays still to go, neither team has a chance at winning a team title, though the Crane boys could earn a top-three finish if things fall their way.
In Class 1A, McCamey's Caitlin Gulihur took fourth in the 100 hurdles with a personal-best time of 15.95 seconds.
