Special Olympics to compete in basketball tournament
About 30 West Texas teams are scheduled to show up Saturday in Odessa to compete in an area basketball tournament for the Special Olympics.
Scheduled to start at 8 a.m. at the Odessa College Sports Complex, teams from the Permian Basin will come to compete in the hopes of advancing to the state tournament.
“They (the players) look forward to traveling to compete in these area tournaments,” Odessa basketball coach Gilbert Mendoza said.
Volunteers from both the men’s and women’s Odessa College basketball teams will be giving up their time to keep score and referee during the day and total turnout for the event, including staff and athletes, is around 1,000 people.
“It feels great,” Sports Complex Manager Al Almodova said. “Our guys come in and see the kids and once they see them, the kids are fired up to play some basket ball.”
