Junior college golf: OC finishes winning effort at GreenTree
Comments 0 | Recommend 0MIDLAND Last season, the Odessa College golf team won every regular season tournament.
The Wranglers won the state tournament and the regional tournament.
They were heavy favorites to win the national title but instead finished third.
The Wranglers are hoping they don't repeat the same mistakes from last year.
Odessa College I won the Midland College Invitational at GreenTree Country Club on Tuesday, finishing with a three-round total of 863 strokes.
"Last year, we always thought we were going to win," sophomore Ryan Myers said. "We just have to work harder and not take anything for granted."
Midland College I was second at 886, while Odessa College II was third at 889.
The Wranglers are once again winning tournaments, taking all three in which they've played this spring.
Flashing depth in Midland this week, the Wranglers are confident they can make a run at their first national championship since 2005.
"I was really pleased to see (eight) guys in the top 15," OC coach Paul Chavez said. "It is nice to see this time of year. The grittiness to go compete and try to earn a spot."
Joseph Totah hung onto the top spot, becoming the third OC golfer to earn medalist honors in the three tournaments in which they have played.
"It's good confidence for everyone," Totah said. "Any of us can go win it. We're all that good."
Totah finished with a 2-under 214 for the tournament, while No. 5 golfer Mark Penny was second at 218. Jordan Jeffers was third at 219, Landon Waters tied for fourth at 220, and Myers finished in a tie for 10th at 223.
"I stressed to them consistency since Day 1," Chavez said. "We're getting to that point. We are learning to deal with adversity and success. This team is learning how to compete every single stroke."
