College baseball: OC splits; UTPB gears up for Sul Ross State

Odessa College Splits Doubleheader

Behind 9-2 after the second inning, the Odessa College baseball team chipped away at Colby Community College to get a 15-12 win against to split a non-conference doubleheader Monday at American Legion Field.

The Wranglers (4-4) lost 16-11 in the first game, and in the following contest they sliced the lead down to 11-10 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. OC then pounded out five runs to get the victory despite a shaky start by Cord Jezek, who allowed eight earned runs and three walks in 1 2/3 innings.

In the win, Chris Winder was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a home run for the Wranglers. Beau Poston was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.

In the loss, it was almost the opposite story.

OC had a 7-0 lead after the second inning and watched as the Trojans (3-2) tied it at 7 in the following frame and went ahead using an eight-run outburst in the fifth inning.

Two Wranglers homered in the loss: Preston Springer (3-for-4, two RBIs, two runs) and Andrew Garcia (1-for-3, two RBIs, one run).

Next for OC: a four-game home series against Pratt College beginning with a doubleheader at noon Saturday.

Early season rematch for Falcons

ALPINE The UTPB baseball team will get a Heartland Conference respite at 3 p.m. today against Sul Ross State University in Alpine.

The Falcons (7-3 overall, 5-2) got the edge the last time they faced the Lobos (1-8 overall), notching a 23-13 win Feb. 1 at Roden Field in the teams' season openers.

UTPB is in fine shape after taking three of four games from conference foe St. Mary's, ranked No. 13, last weekend.

For the season, the Falcons' Christopher Hook is batting .471 with a team-high 18 RBIs, followed by Logan Forest at .405.

UTPB pitchers have a combined 5.02 ERA, and ace Flynn Stachowski is 1-1 with a 3.01 ERA in three starts.

Sul Ross got its first win, 5-2 on Saturday, in the second game of a three-game series against the University of Dallas during the weekend. The Lobos lost the series, 2-1. 

Javier Arrieta leads Sul Ross State at the plate, batting .553 with four home runs and 10 RBIs. Sul Ross pitchers carry a combined 11.02 ERA.
