Golf: Hanks, Amarillo High share West Texas Classic lead

El Paso Hanks and Amarillo High both turned in rounds of 287 to share the lead after the first round of the West Texas Boys Golf Classic.

Amarillo High was led by a 67 from Colt Melton at Ratliff Ranch Golf Links, which shares the medalist lead with the 67 posted by Arturo Cardenas of El Paso Cathedral. Hanks was led by a 69 from Nick Chacon.

Permian is seventh out of the 15-team field with a 305 that was led by a 73 from Micah Rodgers, a 75 by Mason Taliaferro and a 77 by Hayden Burnett.

Odessa High turned in a 318 behind a 77 from Austin Holcomb and a 79 by Bobby Florez.

After Hanks and Amarillo High at 287, Cathedral is third at 297, Lubbock Coronado is fourth at 298 and El Paso Coronado is fifth at 300. Beaumont Kelly stands sixth at 301, Midland High is eighth at 306 and San Angelo Central is ninth at 307.

The tournament concludes today at Odessa Country Club’s Links Course.
