Gene Powell Jr.

Managing Editor Gene Powell Jr. joined the Odessa American as Assistant Managing Editor in March 2002. Before that, he served as editor of The Tribune, a Freedom newspaper in Seymour, Ind. An Odessa native, Powell was with Gannett Newspapers for more than two years in Shreveport, La., serving as news editor. Powell also worked for six years with the San Angelo Standard-Times and has worked at newspapers in North Carolina and Missouri. Powell started his newspaper career with two summer internships and a stint on copy desk at the Odessa American in the late 1980s. Powell finished his schooling at Angelo State University, but he also has attended Odessa College, UTPB and Texas Tech. Powell has deep roots in Texas. A graduate of Permian High, his two sisters graduated from Odessa High. His mother is from Midland, his father is from Spur. Powell and his wife, Trish, have three children, Rylee, Brittney and Matthew
