Permian Basin Fair rolls around again

THE POINT — Volunteers go to great lengths to make the annual event a big success.

Almost everyone who ventures out to the Permian Basin Fair and Exposition each year finds something that makes the event special. Actually, there are lots of folks among the tens of thousands who find several things that keep them coming back.

Many have longtime favorite attractions, such as the Wild West Show, which showcases local talent shooting it out time and time again.

Others like the variety of acts that the fair committee works so hard to find to lend a new touch to each edition of the fall favorite.
For others, it's as simple as the wide spectrum of food that is offered. The chance to enjoy a good old midway funnel cake doesn't come along every day.

But the point is that a bunch of dedicated volunteers work very hard to give people reasons to keep coming back for more entertainment every single year.

One thing's for sure, this is an event that just doesn't appear out of thin air. It takes a lot of dedication by hundreds of people. For more than three decades, those who give of their time to bright the lives of children of all age have been working their magic.

And, that's probably the key to the fair's success. There are people who simply love to come to it every year and we expect that to be the case again as another edition kicks off today.

After all, the fair has cute animals, all kinds of music, daredevil acts, competition for awards and ribbons, specialty performers who bring unique and often dazzling talents to town and the almost-extinct pleasure of just running into people who you haven't seen in years.

The fair, after all, is one grand reason to forget about the grind for a few hours and just enjoy a festive atmosphere.

From the carnival to the petting zoo, a departure from the norm awaits fairgoers.

In fact, we'd be willing to bet that a casual fairgoer wouldn't be able to cruise through the action at the Ector County Coliseum grounds without finding several reasons to stop and spend some time just chilling.

No matter what floats your boat at the fair each year, we hope you find the time to make another trip to this well-organized extravaganza for your annual fix.
