Police: Drug use, driving endangered kids (+MUGS)(+AFFIDAVIT)

A 32-year-old Odessa woman and a 42-year-old Odessa man were arrested and charged with two counts of endangering a child after, police said, they nearly overdosed on prescription pills while driving with the woman’s two children.

Rachel Lynn McMillan and David John Estes Voorhies, both of 2740 N. Muskingum Ave, were both being held Friday awaiting bond after their arrests Thursday morning.

According to arrest warrant affidavits, on Jan. 23 McMillan’s 11-year-old daughter called 9-1-1 from their home when McMillan and Voorhies were sitting unresponsively in a vehicle, “shaking uncontrollably.”

The affidavits stated that inside the vehicle, authorities found 26 pills of Soma, a muscle relaxer. The affidavits stated the adults were taken to Medical Center Hospital and treated for an overdose, and while in the emergency room, both told an officer they had taken a total of three pills.

The affidavits stated that Feb. 8, McMillan and Voorhies admitted they went to Kermit with their children to buy the pills from someone, with McMillan driving. They said they each took two pills at 42nd Street and Andrews Highway, about a mile away from their home, but they hadn’t ever used the pills before, the affidavits stated, and had a bad reaction. The affidavits stated the pair claimed they took the muscle relaxers due to “chronic back problems and other ailments” but admitted “they had made a terrible mistake in ingesting the pills.”

Voorhies, named David in the affidavit, was listed as John Estes Voorhies in the county’s jail list. Public records gave Voorhies’ full name as David John Estes Voorhies, however.
