A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed about 1 p.m. Sunday in Martin County.

Martin County Sheriff John Woodward said another 13-year-old boy was present at the time of the incident. The sheriff's office is awaiting autopsy results.

"Hopefully we can rule this as an accident," Woodward said.

The shooting happened about 10 miles north of Stanton on a farm and a small caliber rifle was the weapon used Woodward said.

Woodward said the body was sent to Lubbock for an autopsy to be performed Monday.

"We want to protect the (13-year-old boy) who was involved and the family but hopefully after we get the autopsy we'll have more of an explanation from the incident," Woodward said.
