How do you spell winner?

The 31st annual Regional Spelling Bee is scheduled for Feb. 28 at Deadrick Hall on the Odessa College campus, 201 W. University Blvd. Registration begins at 9 a.m., while the bee starts at 9:30 a.m.

The winning student will advance to the national competition in May in Washington, D.C. The trip, sponsored by the Odessa American, includes airfare, room and meal expenses for the student and a parent. Other prizes for the first-place winner include a copy of the Webster's Third New International Dictionary and an Adenda section from Merriam-Webster, the Samuel Louis Sugarman award from Jay Sugarman ($100 Series EE U.S. Savings Bond) and a trophy from the OA.

The second-place winner receives a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com from the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, a Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and a trophy.

The third-place winner receives a $25 Hastings gift card from the OA, a trophy and a year's subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online.

The fourth-place winner receives a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com from Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, a trophy from the OA and a year's subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online.

The fifth-place winner receives a $15 Hastings gift card, a trophy from the OA and a year's subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online.

The winners include:

>> Jonathan Hohstadt, 11, son of Lowell and Kathy Hohstadt, is a sixth-grader at Hohstadt Home School. Jonathan likes piano, puppetry and computer animation. He competed against four other spellers. Fifth-grader Drew Hantz, 11, won second place.

>> Elizabeth Gray, 10, daughter of Greg and Deana Gray, is a fifth-grader at Sweetwater Intermediate School. Elizabeth likes reading and soccer. She competed against 53 spellers. Fourth-grader John Clift, 9, won second place.

>> Lexi Gregory, 12, daughter of Lori and Bryan Gregory, is a sixth-grader at Sweetwater Middle School. Lexi likes to play basketball and softball. She competed against 27 other spellers. Seventh-grader Kassidy Bird, 12, won second place.

>> Elizabeth Kinsey, 11, daughter of Amy and Tommy Kinsey, is a fifth-grader at Cavazos Elementary School. Elizabeth likes basketball, football and reading. She competed against 42 spellers. Third-grader Kiara Sanchez, 9, won second place.

>> Royce Cole, 12, son of Perry and Shawn Cole, is a sixth-grader at Sudderth Elementary School. Royce likes drawing, swimming and basketball. He competed against 15 spellers. Fifth-grader Coy Sotelo, 11, won second place.

>> Jeffery Bale, 12, son of Emmitt and Teri Bale, is a seventh-grader at Kermit Junior High. Jeffery likes reading and playing video games. He competed against eight spellers. Sixth-grader Jayden Fuqua, 11, won second place.
