Comments 0 | Recommend 0The 31st annual Regional Spelling Bee is scheduled for Feb. 28 at Deadrick Hall on the Odessa College campus, 201 W. University Blvd. Registration begins at 9 a.m., while the bee starts at 9:30 a.m.
The winning student will advance to the national competition in May in Washington, D.C. The trip, sponsored by the Odessa American, includes airfare, room and meal expenses for the student and a parent. Other prizes for the first-place winner include a copy of the Webster's Third New International Dictionary and an Adenda section from Merriam-Webster, the Samuel Louis Sugarman award from Jay Sugarman ($100 Series EE U.S. Savings Bond) and a trophy from the OA.
The second-place winner receives a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com from the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, a Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and a trophy.
The third-place winner receives a $25 Hastings gift card from the OA, a trophy and a year's subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online.
The fourth-place winner receives a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com from Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, a trophy from the OA and a year's subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online.
The fifth-place winner receives a $15 Hastings gift card, a trophy from the OA and a year's subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online.
The winners include:
>> Jonathan Hohstadt, 11, son of Lowell and Kathy Hohstadt, is a sixth-grader at Hohstadt Home School. Jonathan likes piano, puppetry and computer animation. He competed against four other spellers. Fifth-grader Drew Hantz, 11, won second place.
>> Elizabeth Gray, 10, daughter of Greg and Deana Gray, is a fifth-grader at Sweetwater Intermediate School. Elizabeth likes reading and soccer. She competed against 53 spellers. Fourth-grader John Clift, 9, won second place.
>> Lexi Gregory, 12, daughter of Lori and Bryan Gregory, is a sixth-grader at Sweetwater Middle School. Lexi likes to play basketball and softball. She competed against 27 other spellers. Seventh-grader Kassidy Bird, 12, won second place.
>> Elizabeth Kinsey, 11, daughter of Amy and Tommy Kinsey, is a fifth-grader at Cavazos Elementary School. Elizabeth likes basketball, football and reading. She competed against 42 spellers. Third-grader Kiara Sanchez, 9, won second place.
>> Royce Cole, 12, son of Perry and Shawn Cole, is a sixth-grader at Sudderth Elementary School. Royce likes drawing, swimming and basketball. He competed against 15 spellers. Fifth-grader Coy Sotelo, 11, won second place.
>> Paul Ramirez, 10, son of Monica and Lupe Ramirez, is a fifth-grader at St. Mary's Central Catholic School. Paul likes to play video games and read. He competed against 15 spellers. Sixth-grader Justin Villarojo, 11, won second place.
>> Danielle Dominguez, 12, daughter of Jana Edwards, is a seventh-grader at Crane Middle School in Crane. Danielle likes sports, family, and friends. She competed against 200 spellers. Seventh-grader Amberly Marquez, 12, won second place.
>> Karime Gutierrez, 12, daughter of George and Marisol Gutierrez, is a seventh-grader at Pease Elementary School. Karime likes reading, spelling and jump roping. She competed against 12 spellers. Fifth-grader Amaryca Earnest, 11, won second place.
>> Carlee Cadena, 10, daughter of Jerry Shelli Cadena, is a fourth-grader at Grandfalls-Royalty ISD. Carlee likes spelling, playing sports: tennis, basketball and volleyball. She competed against 14 spellers. Fourth-grader Dillon Brandenburg, 10, won second place.
>> Jeffery Bale, 12, son of Emmitt and Teri Bale, is a seventh-grader at Kermit Junior High. Jeffery likes reading and playing video games. He competed against eight spellers. Sixth-grader Jayden Fuqua, 11, won second place.
>> Caleb Burnett, 14, the son of Wesley and Melissa Burnett, is an eighth-grader at Andrews Middle School. Caleb likes drawing and singing. He competed against 40 spellers. Sixth-grader Zana Guest, 12, won second place.
>> Garrett Julian, 12, son of Rosa and Toby Julian, is a sixth-grader at LBJ Elementary. Garrett likes baseball and bike riding. He competed against 25 spellers. Sixth-grader Leah Sparkman, 12, won second place.
>> Amy Pallares, 11, daughter of Jesus and Maria Pallares, is a fifth-grader at Zavala Magnet Elementary. Amy likes reading. She competed against 30 other spellers. Fifth-grader Leah Garay, 10, won second place.
>> Ramesh Ghanta, 12, son of Amaranath & Charumath Ghanta, is a seventh-grader at Bowie Junior High. Ramesh likes tennis, tae-kwon-do, piano and guitar. Ramesh competed against 18 other spellers. Eighth-grader Gregory Wheeler, 14, won second place.
>> Celisia Urrutia, 10, daughter of Efren Urrutia and Shayla Harrison, is a fifth-grader at Blackshear Magnet Elementary. Celisia likes reading, running, spelling, dancing and singing. She competed against 40 other spellers. Fourth-grader Felipe Payen, 9, won second place.
>> Jordan Juarez, 10, daughter of Jamie and Olivia Juarez, is a fifth-grader at Cameron Dual Language Magnet Elementary. Jordan likes golf and fishing. Fourth-grader Heather Smith, 9, won second place.
>> Eli Rivas, 12, son of Raul Rivas, is a sixth-grader at Murry Fly Elementary. Eli likes football and basketball. He competed against 46 spellers. Third-grader Emmanuel Barreraz, 8, won second place.
>> Ashley Smith, 11, daughter of Eric and Jennifer Smith, is a fifth-grader at Milam Magnet Elementary. Ashley likes soccer, go-carting and dance. She competed against 17 spellers. Sixth-grader Megan Addington won second place.
>> Luke Maxwell, 11, son of Jana and Mark Maxwell, is a fifth-grader at Blanton Elementary. Luke likes football and climbing trees. He competed against 36 spellers. Sixth-grader Bailey Burrows, 12, won second place.
>> Bryant Salazar, 10, son of Mika Hancock, is a fifth-grader at Barbara Jordan Elementary. Bryant likes soccer and guitar. He competed against 26 spellers. Fourth-grader Hayleigh Sweatt, 9, won second place.
>> Daniel Luevano, 12, son of Abel and Rosalinda Luevano, is a seventh-grader at Sanderson Junior High. Daniel likes golf, track and history. He competed against four other spellers. Sixth-grader Grace Jahn, 12, won second place.
>> Tyler Smith, 11, son of Todd and Sandra Smith, is a sixth-grader at St. John's Episcopal School. Tyler likes sports, reading Greek mythology and video games. He competed against 62 spellers. Sixth-grader Sam Sturgeon, 12, won second place.
>> Taylor Bailey, 11, daughter of Judy and Steve Bailey, is a fifth-grader at Underwood Elementary School. Taylor likes sports, choir and collecting. He competed against 60 spellers. Fifth-grader Emilie Looslie, 11, won second place.
